Since 3 August 2026, stocks that have F&O contracts stop continuous trading at 3:15 PM and get their closing price from a closing auction that ends by 3:35 PM. What are F&O trading hours?
| Session | Time (IST) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Equity derivatives (F&O) normal market | 9:15 AM – 3:40 PM | Index and stock futures and options. The close moved from 3:30 to 3:40 PM on 3 August 2026. |
Futures and options keep trading for 25 minutes after continuous trading in their underlying stocks stops at 3:15 PM. From 3:15 PM, stock futures use a ±3% price band around a reference price taken from 3:00 to 3:15 PM, in line with the band in the cash-market auction.
How does the pre-open session work?
- 9:00 to 9:05 AM: place, modify or cancel limit and market orders.
- 9:05 to 9:10 AM: limit orders only; market orders can no longer be placed, changed or cancelled. Order entry closes at a random moment between 9:08 and 9:10 AM.
- Order matching, by 9:12 AM: the exchange finds the single price at which the most shares can trade. That becomes the opening price, and matched orders become trades.
- 9:12 to 9:15 AM: a buffer period, then continuous trading starts at 9:15 AM.
Only limit and market orders are accepted in the pre-open session. The random close stops last-second orders from moving the opening price; it took effect on 7 September 2026, when the pre-open was aligned with the closing auction.
What is the closing auction session (CAS)?
The closing auction sets the day's closing price by a call auction instead of an average of late trades. NSE introduced it on 3 August 2026 for cash-market stocks that have derivative contracts; other stocks keep trading until 3:30 PM and keep the earlier closing-price method.
- Reference price: the volume-weighted average price of trades from 3:00 to 3:15 PM, or the last traded price if there were none.
- Price band: ±3% around the reference price during the auction.
- Orders: only limit and market orders. Stop-loss and disclosed-quantity orders are not allowed.
- Closing price: the auction's equilibrium price; if no equilibrium price is found, the reference price becomes the close.

Can you trade before 9 AM or after 4 PM?
Not on the exchange. The earliest session is the 8:45 AM block deal window, which is only for large negotiated trades, and the post-close session ends at 4:00 PM. Outside these hours, most brokers accept after-market orders (AMO) and send them in the next pre-open session.
Price alerts work the same way: they are checked on live prices during market hours. StockNotify keeps your NSE stock alerts armed overnight and over weekends and checks them again from the next session.
